Community Information

At Bulleen Art & Garden we're proud to be a part of vibrant and diverse community. There are a number of ways Bulleen Art and Garden works with the rest of the community. We hope to be a meeting place and resource for the community. Our community activities have focussed on our areas of interest and expertise: the environment, gardening, the arts and children. Below are some of the ways we take part in the community... with staff, owners and customers working together on community projects. Links with the local community have been built over a long period through a combination of involvement and support. We have also included here information on community groups and resources if you are looking to get involved.

Friends of the Yarra Valley Parks

The Friends of the Yarra Valley Parks is a group whose primary aim is to involve the wider community in conservation issues and activities within the Yarra Valley Parklands. They believe that the Yarra Valley Parklands has the potential to become one of the great urban conservation parks. Their activities include plant propagation, planting and weed removal. www.yvfriends.org.au/

FYVP Tree Planting Day - Sunday 29th July. 2007

The Friends of the Yarra Valley Parklands (with the assistance of BAAG and Parks Victoria) were out in force on Sunday with the help of over 120 enthusiastic volunteers from the local community and scout groups. On Sunday we were able to plant over 1,500 indigenous plants in a new wetland area created at the rear of BAAG next to Kim Close.

The plants will help to remove nutrients from stormwater runoff entering the Yarra and stabilise the soil on the surrounding embankment. The new wetland will also make an excellent home for a range of animals in the area including birds, frogs and lizards. Click here to see more images of the day.

2007 Yates National Nursery and Garden Industry Award Winners

Bulleen Art & Garden is very proud to be first recipients of the Yates Nursery and Garden Industry National Awards for both Community and the Environment.

The awards are open to all businesses in the nursery & garden industry throughout Australia including wholesale, retail and suppliers.

Children

A special area has been set aside to encourage childrens' love of gardening as well as entertain them. There are friendly chooks (get your kids to check for eggs!) and worm farms.

There is also a special Kid's Web site at www.baag.com.au/kids.html with loads of activities and fun stuff to help foster a love of gardening in the younger generation.

Environment

Bulleen Art & Garden is fortunate to be situated on the banks of the Yarra River, surrounded by parkland. We are part of an island of bush in the middle of suburbia.

Indigenous Gardens. We have 'adopted' a small section of the park between the back of our centre and the Yarra River - Little Bolin Flats. Since 1996 we have sponsored the ongoing development of indigenous gardens by Indigenous Design.

BOLIN BOLIN PRECINCT AND CULTURAL LANDSCAPE TRAIL

The Bolin Bolin Cultural Landscape Precinct runs from Bulleen Park to Heide MOMA past the Bolin Bolin Billabong. It derives its identity from its environmental, arts and cultural heritage. Bulleen Art & Garden has been instrumental in setting up a steering committee, with representatives from Parks Victoria, the City of Manningham, Heide MOMA and Bulleen Art & Garden with input from others such as Melbourne Water, the Veneto Club, the Kulin Nation to give an identity to, promote, protect and enhance the precinct.
