Zoo Gro Soil Conditioner

Zoo Gro is temporarily unavailable

Elephants, Giraffes, Pygmy Hippos and more of the wonderful wildlife at Melbourne Zoo play a major role in producing Zoo Gro Soil Conditioner! Prunings and other garden waste, bedding straw from the animals’ night dens, and compostable food packaging from onsite food outlets are added in, and it’s all composted on site in the state-of-the-art Hot Rot processor. This high quality soil improver has been properly composted to kill off any weeds and seeds, and it will help improve water and nutrient retention. HotRot rescues 2 tonnes of organic material a day going to landfill, helping Zoos Victoria to be the world’s first carbon neutral zoological organisation.

Organic Compost

Locally sourced, composted material that re-purposes green waste that otherwise would end up in landfill. Our Compost contains composted plant matter that is rich in nutrients and helps improve impoverished soils, as well as helping to retain moisture. Our organic compost is made to Australian Standards AS 4454 at a temperature that kills any weed seeds and diseases. The combination of smaller and larger timber pieces provide ongoing carbon to feed and provide a substrate for the beneficial microbes in the soil that help to keep your plants healthy.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Recycled materials are used in this product and it may contain occasional rubbish and other inorganic material.

USES:
· Rose, Vegetable and Herb gardens
· Native gardens
· Aerated through the base of a new lawn before adding Lawn Mix

Certified Organic Cow Manure

An excellent addition to all gardens. Cow Manure works as a soil conditioner, opening up the soil and adding humus. It supplies major fertiliser elements and will not raise your pH as much as Mushroom Compost does.

Please note that the feedlot where our cow manure is sourced is involved in the live export industry.

Mushroom Compost

80% straw, wood shavings, horse and fowl manure, 10% gypsum, 10% peat and limestone

A by-product of the mushroom growing trade, Mushroom Compost is rich in organic matter and manures. Excellent for soil improvement in most soil types.

USES:
· For mixing with existing garden soils, especially annual, rose and vegetable gardens.
· As a component of other soil mixes.
· Note: Never to be used with acid-loving plants.

Bulka Bags

Bulka Bags

All of our bulk products are available in bulka bags for convenience. Bulka bags can be used when there is poor access, or when the product needs to stored in a bag until it is used. Instead of having a pile of mulch in your driveway, or soil on your nature strip, a bulka bag will keep the product clean, tidy and accessible. The bags will hold 1 cubic metre of lighter product like mulch, compost or soil or three quarters of a cubic metre of heavy product like sand or crushed rock.

Bulka Bags are delivered with our crane truck. Email yard@baag.com.au or call us on (03) 8850 3030 to get a price on delivery. Delivery charge is dependant on suburb, bag quantities and the time frame you require. Our crane truck has a reach of approximately 6m. As long as the truck can get good access (no power lines, trees etc) it can reach onto retaining walls or over low fences.

There is an extra charge to supply and fill the bulka bags on top of the product cost, or to refill an old bag (conditions apply to filling a returned bag )

40 mm Landscape Bark

This pine bark based mulch is a by-product of the timber industry. It has large sized particles which allow water to rapidly move through to soil surface taking advantage of any available water. Will take a long time to break down. It is best to blend compost or spread organic fertiliser across the soil surface prior to mulching.

40 mm Landscape Bark should be spread to a minimum depth of 75 mm and should be topped up every second year.
Suitability

  • General garden beds
  • Large garden beds

Availability

  • Bags (coverage 0.75 – 1.0 square metre per bag)
  • Bulk (coverage 10-15 square metres per cubic metre)

Milled Mulch

Milled Mulch is a beautiful looking mulch that is a by-product from the plantation timber industry. It is great at preventing weeds and retaining moisture in garden beds. The mix of small and medium sized pieces will bind together to hold their shape and position, making it fantastic for windy spots or slopes. It will add to the soil condition as it breaks down.

We recommend laying Milled Mulch to a depth of 75-100mm and it should be topped up annually.

Suitability

  • General garden beds
  • Small areas
  • Native gardens

Bio Mat Mulch

Partially composted pine bark based mulch, by-product of the timber industry. Contains recycled organic material (may include some inorganic material).

Excellent water conserving qualities. Its main attributes are that it binds well on slopes and windy areas, absorbs moisture and reduces run-off.

Bio Mat should be spread to a minimum depth of 75 mm and should be topped up annually.
Suitability

  • General garden beds
  • Slopes
  • Native gardens

Availability

  • Bags (coverage 0.5 – 0.75 square metres per bag)
  • Bulk (coverage 10-15 square metres per cubic metre)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Recycled materials are used in this product and it may contain occasional rubbish and other inorganic material.

Recycled Mulch

Recycled Mulch is produced from processed locally collected kerbside greenwaste. Improves moisture retention, encourage worm and microbial activity, suppress weeds, reduce sharp changes in soil temperature and prevent soils from repelling water. As the mulch breaks down it will further add organic material back to the soil.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the recycled nature of this product, it may contain occasional rubbish and other inorganic material.

Recycled Mulch should be spread to a minimum depth of 75 mm and should be topped up annually.
Suitability

  • General garden beds
  • Large garden beds
  • Native gardens

Availability

  • Bulk (coverage 10-15 square metres per cubic metre)

Soft Fall Mulch

Ranging from 3-15mm, this pine based mulch that is a by-product of the timber industry.
It comes from an environmentally sustainable source and has been approved for use in
playgrounds. The Soft Fall mulch has recently evolved in texture slightly.

Should be spread to a minimum depth of 75 mm in garden beds and 100mm in Playground areas.
Soft Fall should be topped up every one to two years.
Suitability

  • General garden beds
  • Playground areas

Availability

  • Bags (coverage 0.75 – 1.0 square metre per bag)
  • Bulk (coverage 10-15 square metres per cubic metre)

Lucerne

Grown primarily for animal feed, lucerne is high in nitrogen and is less likely to contain seeds than pea straw, but as a crop, does require higher levels of water to grow. Lucerne improves soil structure and increases nutrient levels as it breaks down. Lucerne helps stimulate root growth and decreases the chance of root disease in the soil.

Suitable for:

  • Rose gardens
  • Vegie patches
  • Annual garden beds
  • General garden beds

Pea Straw

Pea straw is a crop high in nitrogen grown mostly for animal feed. When used as mulch it breaks down within a year and improves soil structure and nutrient levels. The straw can contain pea seeds that are easily removed or dug over when they first shoot.

Suitable for:

  • Vegie patches
  • Annual garden beds
  • General garden beds
  • Fruit trees

Sugar Cane Mulch

Sugar cane mulch is a by-product of the sugar industry and is transported from Northern Queensland. It is a clean, straw-like mulch that contains low levels of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium and Sulphur. If it dries out, Sugar Cane Mulch can become hydrophobic and hamper water movement to the soil. Improves soil structure as it breaks down.

Suitable for:

  • Rose gardens
  • Annual garden beds
  • General garden beds
  • Slopes
  • Native gardens

Organic Compost

Although this is classed as a compost, many customers are choosing to use the Organic Compost as a mulch as well. It is a finer grade than the Recycled Mulch so will break down and need replacing sooner.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the recycled nature of this product, it may contain occasional rubbish and other inorganic material.

USES:
· Rose, Vegetable and Herb gardens
· Native gardens
· Aerated through the base of a new lawn before adding Lawn Mix

Other Mulch Options

Many other products can be used as mulch. Mulch is generally a product that is put on top of the soil to reduce water loss and suppress weed growth, so don’t forget alternative products such as granitic sand and lilydale or tuscan toppings… or even some of our screenings products 7 or 14 mm. Click here to see some of these products.

Granitic Sand

Granitic Sand is a great alternative to paving or turf, and is a very similar product to Dromana Toppings… but at a fraction of the price. It is also readily available unlike Dromana Toppings. It is ideal for drives and pathways, will not go soft with water or muddy in winter. Should be compacted to a depth of 75mm.

Granitic sand is tan in colour.

5mm Crusher Dust

5mm Crusher Dust is a fine crushed rock, 5mm in size down to dust. It is generally made from bluestone, basalt or granite and is great for compaction. 5mm Crusher Dust is used for backfilling pools, under instant turf or water tanks, for bedding paving or for pathways.

Available in Bulk Bags suitable for crane lifting.

Tuscan Toppings

Tuscan Toppings are generally used as a surface for driveways and paths. After spreading, it is advised to either roll or compact the area to achieve a firm, even surface. Tuscan Toppings pack rock hard but still remain permeable to water.

Crushed Rock

Crushed Rock consists of 20mm minus stone particles capable of solid compaction. Ideal for driveways and paths. Must be used for a foundation when laying paving and for some retaining wall systems. Crushed rock is an ideal under sand or pavers or for a water tank base.

Choosing the right sleeper for the job

Choosing the right sleeper for the job

Photo © Bulleen Art & Garden

When you’re working with sleepers, it’s important to use the right ones for the right job. It doesn’t matter if you’re building a retaining wall or a vegie bed or a fence, or laying garden edging or playground borders – the key to doing the job properly is knowing which sleepers are best for the work at hand. To do the job right and to make sure that health and safety standards are met, it pays to do your research before you jump in.

Luckily, we’ve done that bit for you. Read on for more info on the different kinds of sleepers we stock here are at BAAG, as well as explanations of which job each type is suitable for.

Concrete Sleepers

Concrete Sleepers

Photo © Outback Sleepers

With quality hardwood sleepers becoming increasingly difficult to source and their prices soaring, BAAG now offers concrete sleepers. Available in 2m lengths and very reasonably priced, concrete sleepers are an excellent alternative when building a retaining wall.

With a variety of patterns and colours available, we’re confident we’ll find an option that suits you. Suitable to use for retaining walls of up to 3m high, these sleepers are super strong and reliable. Of course, we can provide the steel uprights that you will need to use for these as well.

A variety of designs are also available in precast concrete step kits. With size, height and depth options available, give us a call to find one that will suit you.

Given the strength of these, some walls may need an engineers report before building commences.

Sand Product Range

Brick Sand

Sometimes referred to as fatty sand. Mainly used for mortaring brick or stone work and for laying under pool linings. Standard mix for mortar is 6:1 (6 parts sand to 1 part cement). For one cubic metre of sand you will need 8 x 20kg bags of cement. This will lay approximately 1200 bricks. Shades of colour may vary between batches.

Concrete / Paving Sand

Mainly used as a concrete sand in a standard 4:2:1 mix (4 parts 14mm screenings, 2 parts sand, 1 part cement).
Concrete / Paving Sand is the main sand used when laying pavers, and is also the ideal sand for a water tank base.

Fine White Sand

Ideal for use in childrens’ sand pits. Also recommended as a jointing sand for paving. It can be mixed with brick sand 50:50 to make a general render. (3 parts brick sand, 3 parts FW sand, 1 part cement)

Random Natural Stone Pavers

With a range of colours and options, random paving or Crazy Paving is a very popular paving option. Random pavers can provide an excellent setting for your courtyard or as steps through the garden.

With colours such as Mintaro Slate, Desert Gold, Titian Brown, Bluestone and Black Velvet in stock, we have a wide selection of colours to choose from. These are all for sale by the square metre with many available for pick up from the yard today. For large orders, delivery is done by truck with a forklift to drop the pallet in an appropriate place.

Natural stone pavers need to be laid on a bed of mortar to provide extra strength. If they are only laid on a bed of sand they may break.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are built to create levels on sloping terrain and to hold soil in place. There are many options to consider when choosing how you will construct your retaining wall. The two most common are sleepers or blocks.

Regardless of the materials used to build the wall, there are some basic points that need to be remembered. Any wall over 1m in height will need to be designed by an engineer and may require council approval. Allowing for drainage behind the wall is one of the most important. Back-filling the base of the wall with scoria and agi-pipe is often the easiest and best method. Having the sock around the agi-pipe will add an extra layer of protection to the pipe to stop roots and soil from penetrating and clogging the pipe. A layer of geo-textile cloth on top of the scoria will help keep the soil away and ensure the scoria doesn’t clog with soil. Geo-textile cloth will allow water to penetrate and drain away whilst holding the soil in place.

Sleeper Retaining Walls

The most common size sleeper when building a retaining wall is 75mm (3 inches) thick. Anything thinner can be too weak and not withstand the forces pushing against them. A hardwood like Reclaimed Cypress or Ironbark can be best for their extra strength, whilst Treated Pine is suitable for use in walls up to 1m in height. If you cut a treated pine sleeper, ensure you re-seal the cut area. Avoid using sleepers longer than 2.4m without extra uprights to prevent the sleepers from bowing.

Concrete sleepers are becoming increasingly popular. Obvious advantages with strength and durability are seeing them used in structural walls. With a variety of colours and textures becoming available to use, you don’t have to look at a plain concrete finish.

The two options for supporting uprights are using sleepers and screwing or bolting the horizontals sleepers to them or using galvanised steel. Galvanised steel will provide a much cleaner and smooth looking finish. Your uprights need to be half in the soil and concreted in. A slight inward angle, around 5 degrees, will help counteract the natural forces pushing against the wall.

Paving cleaners – manmade paving (bricks or concrete pavers)

HCl acid is the best substance to use when removing excess grout from brick or concrete pavers, and will leave a good clean finish.

To avoid damaging your clients’ plants or grass, try to wash into a drain and not onto garden beds or areas of lawn. Mix roughly ten parts water to one part acid (until the mixture fizzes) – always add the acid to the water, never do it the other way around.

And NEVER use it on natural stone pavers.

Paving cleaners – natural stone pavers

Once again, NEVER use HCl acid on natural stone pavers. Instead, use a specialised product to remove light mortar or grouting haze.

Miteq Masonry Cleaner 304 is safe to use on terracotta, natural stone and cement-based pavers and grouts. It is also great for removing the efflorescence (white bloom) you see on both terracotta and glazed pots. And while it won’t repair their cracks and chips, it will help give them a new lease on life by also cleaning off mould, mildew and dirt stains.

Miteq Masonry Cleaner 306 is particularly good at removing organic based stains (such as timber and rust stains) from clay bricks and pavers, terracotta, ceramic tiles, concrete, natural stone and cement-based pavers. It’s also really handy for cleaning the shower!

Miteq Masonry Cleaner 301 is the best thing to use when cleaning paved driveways that have accumulated grease and rubber marks and are generally soiled. It is also a great product for removing rubber marks and grease from terracotta, natural stone, cement based pavers and grouts. These surfaces all come up a treat, but especially so when it is used with a pressure washer.

Paving Sealers

Paving sealers are a great way of making sure that most soils, greases and general food stains don’t become ingrained. They keep stains from penetrating deeply, especially into newly laid surfaces, and make cleaning and the removal of contaminants much easier. There are two types: penetrating sealers and surface sealers.

The first type of penetrating sealer is water-based. This sits just below the surface and gives a good “natural” look – it doesn’t change the appearance of the paver – while also acting as a waterproofing agent. It allows the pavers to “breathe” and can be painted if needed. Miteq Sealer 102 is especially good around pools and other damp areas.

The second type of penetrating sealer is solvent-based, and is used to give a higher level of protection to dense surfaces (granite, bluestone etc) and in heavily trafficked areas (driveways, patios, bathrooms, etc). Miteq Sealer 103 is ideal for these surfaces and areas.

Surface sealers, such as Miteq sealer 201, are used to achieve a high-gloss “wet” look. They sit on the surface of the paver and don’t allow it to “breathe”. While generally glossy, they can have a matt finish. They can often be slippery, and so some varieties can have an anti-slip agent added to them. Some can also be used as an anti-graffiti protectant.

Cement & Dry Mix Products

We stock a large range of cement, dry mix and associated products. All products are conveniently packaged in 20 kg bags. We stock everything you need for your next DIY building, paving or landscaping project.

GP Cement
GP Cement
GP (general purpose) cement is the powder used for making concrete and mortar. GP cement contains around double the actual cement content of GB (general builders) cement, making it a far stronger and higher quality product. GB cement contains 50% slag (a by-product of cement making) and should NEVER be used as a structural cement. If you see bags of cement advertised at insanely cheap prices, be sure you are comparing the same product… GB and GP cement are NOT the same thing.

Concrete Mix
Concrete Mix
The easiest way to mix concrete is with Concrete Mix – just mix with water. It’s ideal for footings, foundations, edgings and any structural application.

Mortar Mix
Brickie’s Mortar
This easy to use pre-blended mortar just needs water. It represents a combination of sand cement and lime in just the right amounts to give a workable mix that’s ideal for brick, block and rock laying, as well as re-pointing and ridge capping.
One 20kg bag will lay approx 20 bricks or 10 cement blocks.

Rapid Set Concrete
Rapid Set Concrete
If you have any non-structural applications such as fence posts or letterboxes the fastest way to concrete is with Rapid Set Concrete. Approximately two 20kg bags will be suitable for a typical hole. Just add water, no mixing is required. The initial set is achieved in 15 minutes.

Hydrated Lime
Limil
Builders lime or Limil is mainly used to make mortar more workable and slow down the drying process.

Pavelok
Pavelok
Pavelok is a stabilised jointing sand used to fill in between the gaps of pavers. Gaps can be a maximum of 3mm. Contains a gel which sets firm but remains flexible. This allows pavers to expand and contract with the weather.

Boral Off White
Boral Off White
Boral Off White is a GP (general purpose) cement and is the powder used for making concrete and mortar. The Off White cement is a very light colour and will provide a different colour finish. Off White cement is exactly the same as Brightonlite cement.

Garden Edging

There are many options for edging your garden. We carry a wide range to choose from to suit most needs. Below is the edging range at BAAG.

FormBoss Corten Steel Edging
2.4m x 100mm and 2.4m x 150mm in stock, other sizes can be ordered.
FormBoss Corten steel (the rusty looking steel) garden edging. The steel is designed with an outer protective patina layer that will provide the distinctive red and brown hues.

Australian Hardwood Timber Edging
4.2m x 75mm x 10mm
Probably the standard form of edging you will see, this hardwood edging is flexible and easy to work. It can be held in place easily with timber pegs or metal clips to create the clear borders in your garden as you desire.

Recycled Plastic Edging
4.2m x 75mm x 8mm
Super flexible and will last forever, the plastic edging will turn into any shape you like. Able to make extremely tight circles, the plastic edging can border plants or entire garden beds. It is only available in brown.

Ecowood Treated Pine edging
4.8m x 75mm x 25mm
As with our Ecowood Treated pine sleepers, this edging is a form of treated pine. The non-arsenic treatment ensures it is a suitable option around kids or the vegie garden. Due to the thickness of the treated pine, it is far more rigid than the other edging options. Details on the Ecowood treatment can be seen here on our Sleeper page.

Linkedge Aluminium edging
3m x 100mm
3m x 75mm
3m x 50mm
Whilst more expensive than other edging options, the aluminium edging can give your garden a modern feel. Simply bend the edging once, knock the spikes into the ground and any shape or curves you desire can be instantly created. With a range of heights available, you can choose the edging that suits your garden. We also stock the joining plates, spikes and spike guides required for Linkedge.

Edging Clips & Joiners
These metal clips can be used on the hardwood edging or plastic edging. Simply knock them into the ground over the edging and they’ll hold the edging in place. You’ll require a clip approximately once every metre, more if creating a tight bend.

Survey pegs
Untreated pine pegs can easily be put against or screwed into the edging. Available in packs of 25, they come in 300mm, 450mm or 600mm sizes. Similarly to the metal clips, we recommend a peg every metre or so.

Alternate options
There are many other options you can take when edging your garden. If you prefer a high edge, maybe a sleeper might be your preferred edging option, see our range of sleepers here. Of course, a line of bricks or pavers can also be used. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box.
