Beaucarnea recurvata
How to keep them thriving indoors in Melbourne!

Please Note: The information below is specific to this particular plant. For more detailed notes on the general growing conditions required for all indoor plants, check out our ‘Growing Indoor Plants Successfully’ factsheet.

A very slow growing indoor plant that can be kept for decades. Incredibly versatile, looks appropriate in arid to tropical landscapes and in edgy modern homes to lush plant-a-holic homes. Over the years it will gradually transform from a sweet desk top plant to a tall plant with an intriguing swollen base tapering to a slim top sprouting a swirl of long green fronds.

Think succulents: Water in the warm growing season only once the top 2cm of potting mix is dry. In winter water only very occasionally – it is better kept fairly dry. Make sure it is perfectly drained at all times.

Bright light – avoid direct afternoon light in summer, but will take direct light otherwise.

Temperature and Humidity
Very happy in humid or dry conditions. Tolerates high temperatures, try to keep above 10C.

Slow release fertiliser in spring.

Your pot plant should be flushed annually. This process flushes away the salts that build up in the potting mix. To flush the pot, water several times in succession, soaking the pot each time until water runs out of the bottom.

Only needs repotting every 4 – 5 years. Only go up one size. A shallow bowl complements the plant shape as it matures. Use cacti and succulent potting mix. After such a long time the plant will be pot bound, cut off matted roots and then repot.

Rarely attacked by pests.
